Someone you never talk to is now in a relationship with someone you’ve never heard of

Abstract thought of the hour: Facebook is incredibly creepy and stalker-like when it comes to publishing information about your friends’ every online (and in some cases, offline) move.
And while we’re on that topic: Has anyone ever noticed that Facebook’s feeds are a new breed of passive gossip? I’m reminded of one of the first things anyone ever told me about Facebook mere hours after I joined:
When a couple breaks up, Facebook knows about it before they do.
What is the strangest thing you’ve ever learned (intentionally or not) about any of your friends through a social networking site like Facebook?

This is why I deleted my facebook on Saturday. Dunzo!
March 12th, 2008 at 2:57 pmHm, I found out one of the people in my year had become a model and now takes photos of themselves revelling in their eating disorder — not the nicest of discoveries.
March 12th, 2008 at 3:14 pmMeh I don’t use facebook, I especially HATE the applications. I don’t check it too often, I guess the only surprising things ever is when I learn of acquaintances getting in a relationship.
March 12th, 2008 at 5:24 pmThe mutual friends box on profiles is always interesting. Facebook really emphasizes what a small world we live in. “SHE’s friends with HIM?!”
Reply: That is so true! I think that’s one of the most freakiest features - It’s actually amazing how we’re all interconnected sometimes.
March 12th, 2008 at 6:47 pmFor the last four years, I’ve been a passive Facebook user. That is to say that I don’t discover things on Facebook because I never sign on unless people are posting hideous pictures of me or unless my wall has been written on. However, my friends tell me things that they discovered about our mutual friends on Facebook.
Friend: Did you hear that they’re engaged?
Me: What?! How do you know this?
Friend: I saw it on Facebook.
Oh wait, I did find out that one of my close friends from elementary school made it to the “Hollywood” step on American Idol.
March 12th, 2008 at 7:57 pmYes, it’s so stalkerish! I hate that it feeds the comments, and when you write on someone’s wall or comment on a picture, every person in friend list reads it. That’s why I don’t like doing writing on people’s profiles too much…
March 12th, 2008 at 9:55 pmThat an acquaintance had DIED. :\ Someone started a group in memoriam…. its kind of fucked up, but its a good way to keep track of my close friends lives — we all “stalk” each other to keep in touch when we’re 100s of miles away. XD
However, you can control what ends up on other people’s news-feeds, and I take full advantage of that. :)
March 12th, 2008 at 10:29 pmHm, I think I haven’t learned anything strange. But then, I’m hardly on facebook/lokalisten/studive (the last two are German ones). I really don’t care either. What I know now though is what people I went to school with are doing now. That’s interesting.
March 12th, 2008 at 10:56 pmWell, I’ve found a friend of mine had been cheated on, making her marriage end up in divorce two days ago. Very sad, cause they got married in September last year and they have three kids together.
Other than that, the same as how small the world is…referring to “she’s friend with him?” :)
March 13th, 2008 at 3:12 amWhat people see you doing on facebook is totally controlled by you though, right? I’ve learned that people can make it seem like they have exciting lives when they really don’t.
March 13th, 2008 at 8:39 amI find that FB relationship thing in your feed hilarious!! Once someone “breaks up” with somebody else, you go to their page and they are bombarded with “what happened?!’s”
March 13th, 2008 at 11:53 pmOne of my friends actually called me one day and said ,”You know what would be a really mean way to break up with someone? Uncheck your status box for “In a Relationship with so and so” on Facebook!” I asked if she was insane. Two hours later she actually did break up with her boyfriend, in person though, luckily. This whole social networking thing totally took relationships to a public, and even exhibitionist level. Yikes. It’s ironic because the guy she broke up with asked me (when the first got together) why I didn’t have MY relationship status on display. Gee, I wonder why.
