JK Rowling: What lies ahead?
November 10th, 2007With Harry Potter completed and tucked out of the away, I can’t help but wonder: what comes now? Will any book (or series of books) manage to break JK Rowling’s impressive standings in terms of worldwide sales and phenomenon? Will any author be able to create an alternative universe as “magical” and captivating as Harry Potter?
Also, if Rowling ever decided to write another book or series, could she “out do” Harry Potter?

To be honest, I don’t think (I could be proved wrong!) that she’ll even try to do another series that could be compared to Harry Potter. Ultimately if she tries to do another fantasy, everybody will be drawing comparisons to the wonderful series. Harry Potter is so vivid and imaginative it’s hard to believe that she could think of yet another complete world.
Reply: True - and even if she did do fantasy again, I can only imagine it would be pretty hard to stop stuff from the HP world from leaking into her new work. Although, it could be kind of cool if she wrote book or series revolving around the life of another witch or wizard in the HP world…
November 11th, 2007 at 4:02 amI don’t think JKR could ever “out do” Harry Potter. But another author could, one day.
The thing is, HP isn’t done yet! There are still the movies coming out, and all those revelations she makes. I don’t think she wants it to end.
Reply: I forgot about the movies! I don’t think she wants it to end either… I can only imagine how attached she’s grown to the series and if the readers are so emotional about the end, she must be twicefold. Does this mean that we’ll keep getting snippets of the HP world (”Hermione is actually Ron’s beard!”) at a slow trickle for the next many years to come? :P
November 11th, 2007 at 5:14 amShe’ll live off the royaltys for a few years, and when she’s bored she’ll bring out some kinda book with, maybe Harry Potter’s son in it.
Unless it was Harry that died. I don’t know - I never read any after the first & second ones.
Reply: Harry didn’t die. :P (I didn’t read the last book, but I know as much) … A book about the second (third?) generation Potters and Weasleys would be very, very odd - fanfictionish, almost.
November 11th, 2007 at 9:53 amI’m going to get e-beat up for this, but J.K. Rowling isn’t that great a writer in the traditional sense. She just managed to find a good idea to run with for a while.
I doubt she’d be able to out do Harry Potter, but then again, I personally think Harry Potter was crap… so maybe she can.
She needs a few writing lessons first though.
Reply: I actually agree - It was the universe she created that made the series so popular, not her actual writing skills. I loved the series up until around the 5th book, but I’ve read many other books that are better written. Just goes to show that apparently it doesn’t take major writing talent to be successful!
November 11th, 2007 at 9:56 amI’m a fan of the Harry Potter series and of JK Rowling, but I don’t think she can top HP. If ever Rowling manages to publish another hit series, we all know that she’ll get good reviews, but Harry Potter will remain the most controversial, in my opinion. I’ve read somewhere that she’s working on the mystery genre, but I must be mistaken.
Reply: Now that you mention it, I’ve heard about that too. I wonder what it’ll be like if she ever publishes it!
November 11th, 2007 at 10:17 amShe’s working on a new book…actually, it’s a book that’s mentioned in the 7th book.
Reply: Really? How interesting - I wonder if it’s connected to the HP world then?
November 11th, 2007 at 3:52 pmShe’ll never be able to out-do Harry Potter, there’s just no way. I heard she’s gonna do an Harry Potter Enzeclopedia or something.. but if she writes a ‘real’ book after that, I’m going to check it out. The story was what make HP popular, sure, but I actually enjoy her writing a lot.
November 11th, 2007 at 9:07 pmI don’t think she’ll be able to out do Harry Potter. I mean Harry Potter is just such a classic. No author that I know of can be more creative in creating a fantasy world greater than what they’ve already created. I mean, how creative can an author be? To create something equal to Harry Potter or better would be pretty hard to achieve even for J.K. Rowling.
November 12th, 2007 at 7:14 amBy the way, your photos look amazing! Sorry I didn’t see them until after I posted the previous comment.
November 12th, 2007 at 7:16 amIn reference to Janet’s comment, she’s actually completed it. Here’s a place with more info: http://tinyurl.com/2uvan9
I wonder how much it’ll auction for…
November 12th, 2007 at 11:47 amI’m sure someone will top JK eventually… I was going to say I don’t think she will do more books. But I just saw the other comments lol
November 13th, 2007 at 12:14 pmI think it’ll be a while until any books outdo what HP has done, HP is so magical - a different series would have to be completely different, otherwise it could be accused of stealing ideas from HP.
And I dont think JKR will be able to release any books which will be bigger than HP, she is known for HP and that is all, she may be able to release a new book succefully because of the HP fanbase but other than that I dont think she would be able to outdo how big HP has been and she could just infact damage her reputation. But, she is writing a HP encylcopedia :)
November 13th, 2007 at 1:50 pmI believe JKR said it herself she won’t try to out do Harry Potter. Someone mentioned she might write a few low-key (then again, can JKR ever be low-key?) crime thrillers, under a pen name of course.
I look forward to the next publishing phenomenon though, the fandom feeling is great.
November 16th, 2007 at 10:24 pmI think that if she did writ another series that was not fantasy it would be just as good. But if it was a fantasy Series then it would be compared to Hp so i don’t know what the outcome would be??
